On Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, our beloved mother (and our sister, Frances MacKenzie) passed away in a tragic house fire.
Born in Creignish Rear, Inverness County, Mom was the youngest child of the late Donald and Margaret MacDonald and the wife of the late Lawrence A. MacKenzie.
She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish, Mira Road. She was also a member of the Immaculate Parish CWL. Mom spoke Gaelic up to the age of five and was known for her unique country drawl.
She worked at the MacGillivray Guest Home for a number of years but mostly enjoyed taking care of her family and extended family members.
She loved gardening, knitting, a fan of the Montreal Canadiens, spending time with her family in Red Islands, watching CNN, saying the rosary and as she was so young at heart, she enjoyed her ‘chats’ with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making each one feel special. Mom always went with the times and kept up-to-date on current events, fads and gadgets.
Left to mourn are her children, Donna (Bernie) Currie, Barry (Luella), Sandy (Denise), Celine Chipman, Michael (Danette), John (Helen Reid), Margaret Ann (Gary Krszwda); grandchildren, Carleton, Melanie, Matthew, Ryan, Colin, Laura, Jennifer, Michelle, Lory, Joni, Jillian, Kaitlyn, Shane, Larissa, Nicole, Kyle, Barbara Layne, Shelby, Dillon, Bhreagh; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Sadie MacPhee; in-laws, Stephen (Annabelle), George (Elvina), Marie Morrison; Sr. Ann (CSM), Doris Brown, Frances (Byron) Howat, Lorna MacKenzie, Mary, Freda and Rita MacDonald, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Lawrence A. (1998), daughter, Marguerite Frances MacKenzie, granddaughter, Joline Melissa Stoddard (1998), son-in-law, Raymond Chipman (2006), her siblings, Margaret, Mary, Mary Ann, Dougal, John Dan, John Angus, Donald, Michael and four in infancy.
Visitation for Catherine MacKenzie will take place Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
