She was born in her family home at Munro’s Point, Cape Breton to Captain Angus and Mary Carmichael. At a young age she often travelled with her family on her father’s schooner ‘The Ambition’. Her sea-faring family and Scottish heritage influenced her long and well-lived life. In 1937 Margaret graduated from Normal College in Truro, N.S. They settled in Baddeck, N.S. where they raised their three children, Heather (Lloyd) MacInnes, John (Margot) and Randle (Patty).
Margaret moved to Victoria, B.C. with her husband and sons in 1964 when Randle became captain of the weathership CCGS St. Catharines.
Her husband, Capt. Dykes passed away in 1999. Margaret was also predeceased by her sister, Muriel Bethune; brothers, Hector and Donald Carmichael and a great-grandson, Noah.
Left to mourn her loss are her three children, her grandchildren, Lloyd Michael (Trina), Megan (David) MacInnes, Meadow, Allan and David (Cori) Dykes. Also missing Margaret will be six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and her brother-in-law, Normie Bethune.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at St Ann’s Bay United Church at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
