NELMES, Maimie Eileen “Naanaq” (Nana in Inuit) – 66, Truro, formerly of Chilliwack, British Columbia, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday evening, August 28, 2009. Born January 3, 1943, in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Ethel (Oscar) Peffer. As a young girl, Maimie loved to go trapping in Aklavik with her father. She loved to sew and made many things for herself and her family, often making the pattern herself. She loved to cook and credited herself with being “The Best Cook”, watching detective and British shows on television, her favourite being, On The Busses, and also loved her little “race car”, a 1986 Honda Accord. She worked at The Manor in Chilliwack and also with Esso on their barges as a cook’s assistant and housekeeping, from where she retired in 1987. Maimie is survived by her children, Sheila Morrissey, Truro; Raymond, Oxford; Sandra McNutt, Bible Hill; Heather (Ronald) Jones, Australia; Agnes Adams, Truro; grandchildren, Dwayne, Jennifer, Janice, Charles, Melissa, Grace, Abbi, Sabrina, Angel and Anthony; sisters, Agnes Carpenter, Helen Peffer; brothers, Stanley Wilbert II (Nancy) Peffer, all of Inuvik; David Peffer, Yellowknife; former husband, Douglas W. Adams, Bible Hill; several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Merv Nelmes; daughters, Janice and one other in infancy; brothers, Harry Jacob, Norman and Stanley Wilbert I. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the family will receive friends from 3-6 pm Wednesday, September 2, 2009. All are invited to come and share in this celebration of Maimie’s life. No flowers by request. If so desired, donations in Maimie’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia are welcomed.
