Bertilla Marie Whalen passed away Friday, May 27, 2011 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, she is the daughter of “Benefit” Joe and Nellie MacDonald.
She is survived by her husband and best friend of 63 years, Donald “Whip” Whalen; one sister, Ursula Devan, Sydney; her sons, Michael (Connie) Whalen, Groves Point, Cape Breton, N.S.; Joe (Paul) of Chelsea, Que.; Alfred (Sylvia) Whalen, Eastern Passage, N.S.; one daughter, Darlyne Whalen, Moncton, N.B.; grandchildren, Troy (Nancy) Whalen, Calgary, Alta.; Kirk (Kelly) Whalen, Calgary, Alta.; Devin (Jessie) Whalen, Toronto, Ont; Jason Power, Saint John, N.B.; Aaron Power, Moncton, N.B.; Kayla Marie Whalen, Eastern Passage, N.S.; and one great-grandson, Tavin Whalen of Calgary, Alta.
Bertilla taught school for many years including Constatine School in Sydney; Sydney River Elementary; Coxheath Elementary, Coxheath; Riverview High, Sydney River and Thompson High, North Sydney. She was a member of the Sydney River Catholic Women's League of Our Lady of Fatima Church.
After her retirement from teaching, she and Whip enjoyed travelling the world from Florida to Spain to Mexico, but always coming back to spend time with family at the cottage in Margaree Forks. Her favourite hobbies were sewing clothes for herself and the family including making quilts for everyone that will be forever treasured by all. Bert also enjoyed spending her time playing bridge with the girls.
Cremation has taken place. No visitation. Memorial service to take place at a later date.
