Beatrice Marguerite Mason passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital, just shy of her 95th Birthday. She will be truly missed by relatives and friends.
Born Feb.19th, 1924 to Mary Forestall and Melvin Falconer in Stellarton, N.S. She was predeceased by her brothers Dickson and Cecil.
Beatrice studied Education in Truro at the Normal College and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Lismore. She met a local farmer/musician, Norbert Mason and they married in 1945, having 10 children. The first four were born on Big Island – Phyllis (Bob Cullen), Jerome (Mary Thompson), Judith and Estelle. After a brief stay in Egerton, the Masons relocated to New Glasgow. Beatrice and Norbert had six more children- Norbert Allan, Gordon, Clare (Mike Grieves), Doris, Ralph (Anne Marie Mann) and Cyril. Her grandchildren are Heather and Robert McGrath, Tom, Grace and Ross Mason, Caroline and Collin Grieves, Patrick, Michael, Bridget and Danny Mason. To date, she has 12 great-grandchildren.
Beatrice enjoyed music, dancing, sewing, reading, baking and later in life, a passion for crossword puzzles. She would do 3 to 4 daily, after reading the newspaper from cover to cover. She recorded “Twas the Night Before Christmas” for the “Christmas With The Masons” CD. For over 20 years, Bea would take the bus to attended the New Glasgow Kiwanis Music Festival to hear her children perform in many classes. She was generous and loving to her family and was fiercely loyal to her clan and never forgot a Birthday or Anniversary. Beatrice lived alone after Norbert died but enjoyed the company of family throughout those years until having a stroke at age 91.
Recently, she was a resident of Glen Haven Manor Senior’s Home, where she met many acquaintances and even a former student. She was very popular with the staff and found new friends, young and old alike. She was sweet, smart and funny. Everyone loved her beautiful smile.
Our family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Aberdeen, St. Martha’s, Sutherland Harris Rehab, Glen Haven Manor, Sisters Mary and Marie, the CWL, Mary Jane, as well as her many roommates of late who looked out for her. She also wanted to thank the attractive paramedics who made her journeys enjoyable.
Visitation will be at H.W. Angus Funeral Home, 256 King St., N.G. on Fri. Jan.18th from 2-4p.m. and 7-9p.m. Her Funeral will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Sat., Jan.19th at 2p.m. with Father Barrett Clare-Johnson presiding and joined by extraordinary minister Father Peter MacDonald. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
