It is with deep sorrow and broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Donald Joseph Lewis in the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Sunday, February 24, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
Born April 15, 1931, to Herbert Charles and Anne Marie (MacDonald) Lewis of Sydney.
Donnie was a hard worker all his life, retiring from the Sydney Steel Plant with 38 years service. He was an avid dart player and enjoyed many games of tarabish with family and friends. In his spare time, Donnie loved working on cars and in earlier years, enjoyed stock car racing, as well as hunting with his buddies. Another of his favorite pastimes was spending endless hours in his vegetable garden.
Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Edith (Butler) Lewis; son, John (Nancy), Peterborough, Ont.; daughters, Diane (Randy) MacDonald, Sydney River, Valerie Cooke (Darryl), Middle River, Margaret (David) Gillis, Whitney Pier and Debra (Eric) Christmas, Hammonds Plains; son-in-law, Nick Pallotta, Thornhill, Ont.; brothers, Earle, Sandy (Chook) and Leo (Marie); sister, Rena Carew; sister-in-law, Denise Lewis; brother-in-law, Wilfred (Judy) Butler; nine grandchildren, Ian (Amanda) Lewis, Robert MacDonald, Amanda (James) Walker, Danny (Laura) MacDonald, Jennifer (Pallotta) Delpero, Patrick Gillis, John David Gillis, Cameron MacDonald and Logan Christmas; four great-grandchildren, Madison, Tony, Julia and Connor; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Donnie was predeceased by his daughter, Ruby (Lewis) Pallotta; son-in-law, Bill Cooke; brothers, Arthur, Charles and Thomas; sisters, Ethel and Anna Mae; brothers-in-law, Robert Holland, Bernie Carew, John Jackson and Robert McInnis; sisters-in-law, Janet, Gaye, Teresa and Florence McInnis.
We would like to sincerely thank the nurses and staff of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the compassionate and loving care provided to Donnie.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 10-11 a.m., followed by a memorial service in the chapel at 11 a.m., with Rev. Dennis Lamey officiating. Reception to follow.
Interment in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of one's choice.
