Anna Kathryn Matheson, age 88, of Amherst passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay on November 3, 1920 to Angus and Mary (MacDonald) MacLeod, Anna was always proud to call herself a Cape Bretoner.
She graduated from Normal College in June 1939 and taught school at MacKay\'s Corner and Central School in Glace Bay. Anna was Music Festival Secretary for several years and was active in Y.P.U. at local, Presbytery, Conference and National levels.
In 1951 she married Rev. J. Parker Matheson and supported him in ministry in Upper Stewiacke, St. Peter\'s, Liverpool, Parrsboro and Amherst.
During these years she continued to substitute teach. She loved to entertain and enjoyed having guests around her table.
Anna took great pleasure in her flower beds, and loved the beauty and wonder of the blooming plants. She took great pride in her handiwork. She was an active participant in reduce, re-use and recycle before it became popular.
Anna was a member of Trinity St. Stephen\'s United Church; an active member of UCW, having been presented a life membership; a former member of Chignecto Presbytery; member of the Board of Drew Nursing Home; member of Eastern Star; campaign co-ordinator for Heart and Stroke Foundation; supportive member of the Amherst Branch of the Arthritis Society.
Anna is survived by daughters Mary Lynn (Gordon Cameron) Amherst; Edna Mae Matheson (Brad Davidson) Pleasantville, NS; Kathy Matheson (Martin Aiello) Calgary; son Jamie \"Jim\" (Alice MacKichan) Calgary; stepdaughter Elizabeth Ann (Murray McIsaac) Halifax; brother Allister MacLeod (Juliette) Fall River, NS; brother-in-law Alex Morrison, St. Peter\'s, NS; thirteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Anna is predeceased by her husband Rev. J. Parker Matheson, brother Iain and sister Ruth Morrison.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Campbell\'s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. from Trinity-St. Stephen\'s United Church, Ratchford Street, Amherst with Rev. Susan Estabrooks and Rev. Patti Blundell officiating.
Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery.
