With broken hearts we announce the passing of John Simpson, age 70, on Thursday, March 7, 2019, at the Northside General Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney Mines on October 5, 1948, John was the son of the late Thomas and Cecilia (Barrie) Simpson.
John worked for Russell Ashe Trucking and CN Marine. He was a member of the Sydney Mines Fire Dept., with the rank of Engine Captain, a member of the Cape Breton Firefighters Fraternal Association, and an honourary member of the Sydney Mines Fire Dept. (retired)
John was also instrumental in re-starting the Sydney Mines Minor Baseball League, from umpiring and coaching, to President, and winning Association of the year in NS. John loved the simple things in life, spending time with his grandchildren, and his special friend, D.O.G.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wendy (Nugent); and his children, Elizabeth (Steven), Tommy (Marion), and Jo-Anne (Nick). Also left to mourn are his grandchildren, Justin, Kendra, Olivia, and Micayla; his brother, Joe (Helen); sister-in-law, Alma Ashe; brother-in-law, Michael Nugent, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for John Simpson will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2019, from 6-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday, at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. A reception will be held at the John J. Nugent Fireman’s Center, after the service.
Donations in John’s memory may be made to Palliative Care or the Haley St. Center.
