Catherine Elaine MEYERS

Meyers, Catherine Elaine ‘Cathy’ - writer, artist, blogger - of Apple River, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It is with great sadness that we announce her passing on Friday, March 15, 2019 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan, with friends and family at her side. Cathy was a beautiful free soul who burned bright and brought much love, life, wisdom, laughter and joy to all who knew her. Her spirit will live on in her many friends and family members for always. Catherine was born in 1953 in Amherst. She grew up in Ontario after her parents relocated when she was six months old. Her family returned to Nova Scotia in 1968. After attending the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design for four years in Halifax during the 1970’s, she returned to study art once again at the age of 56 as a mature student at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick where she graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, receiving the Catherine Arsenault-MacDonald Memorial Award. This award is given to those mature students who exhibit perseverance and determination in achieving their degree. To attend Mount Allison University, Cathy hitchhiked from her rural home in Apple River to Mount Allison University, a journey taking several hours each day. During her time in between her art education, she worked as a Youth Care Worker for many years, as an apprentice welder and equestrian. She had a deep love for everything equestrian and this was reflected in some of her art work. Cathy had a varied and colourful series of life experiences from studying Mime at the Commedia dell’arte in Toronto, to baking bagels at the Wild Cat Cafe in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to teaching Middle Eastern Dance (belly dance) to women in her small community of Apple River. Cathy had a deep spiritual connection with nature and this nurtured her soul and inspired her creativity. She also felt deeply the ‘Divine Feminine’ which exists within all of us and was reflected in her series of egg tempura paintings based on the book ‘Women Who Ran with Wolves’, a book that represented a “longing for the wild and understanding the wild women and knowing the soul”. Cathy said that her overall purpose and mission was to enable individuals to connect with their own personal creative insight and personal archetype, discovering unknown depths in life within the self and reconnecting to the creative feminine. Cathy felt that “if you’ve learned from your most painful and joyful experiences with courage you will find your creative vision, purpose and mission, and find your own story to tell.” She was a survivor of alcoholism and ‘The Serenity Prayer’ was a touchstone within her life. She lived the last 27 years of life in the beautiful community of Apple River where she found peace and inspiration. Cathy was predeceased by her mother, Sarah Helen (Milner) Myers; her father, Rudolph Myers; a brother Ralph Myers; and husband, Bill Hackett. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Funeral service 2 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, Shelly Trenholm officiating. Reception to follow at the Advocate Fire Hall. Memorial donations may be made to CARMA (Cat Rescue Maritimes), Rocking Horse Ranch and Rehabilitation Centre or the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Online condolences at www.smithsfuneralhome.com .
