Edith Nathanson passed away on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Edie was born in Sydney, N.S. on Sept. 20, 1929.
She graduated from Sydney Academy and later trained as a nurse at the Halifax Infirmary. During that time, she met and later married Daniel Nathanson, who was completing his medical degree.
In 1956, Danny and Edie moved to New Waterford, where they raised their four children, Garth (Glennis), Sydney, Sheila (Steve) Simmons, Norine (Al McLaren) and Ian, all of Toronto, Ont.
Edie also became actively involved in community life through the IODE, Hadassah-Wizo and the sisterhoods of the Congregation Sons of Israel, New Waterford and the Temple Sons of Israel, Sydney.
In her later years she moved to the CND Unit of the MacGillvray Guest Home where she was blessed with loving care and tenderness. She treasured her time there participating in all aspects of resident life. She particularly enjoyed time spent with the resident choir — “The Sopranos.†She carried her love of music to her final days.
Edie was predeceased by Daniel, her husband of 44 years, and her brother, Morris, Winnipeg.
In addition to her children, she is survived by her sister, Minnie Nathanson; her brother, Hymie Hirsch and her grandchildren, Lindsay and Robin Nathanson, Jeffrey and Michael Simmons, Katie and Dania McLaren.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the administration, staff and residents of the CND unit of MacGillvary Guest Home.
Our sincere thanks also go to the staff and doctors of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, unit 4C and the palliative care unit.
Funeral service will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday at 11 a.m. with Rabbi David Ellis officiating. Burial to follow at the Hebrew Cemetery, Sydney. Family will be receiving visitors (Shiva) on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 7 from 3-5 p.m. at 21 Cedar Court, Sydney.
