It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Patrick ‘Pat’ MacMillan, 89, of Northside Guest Home, formerly of 571 King St., New Waterford, on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at the Northside Guest Home.
Born in Scotchtown, Sept. 24, 1921, he was a son of the late John Daniel and Grace (Cherry) MacMillan.
Pat was a member of the former Mount Carmel parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard.
In his early years he picked coal at the Summit for his father’s coal hauling business. He worked in No. 16 colliery for 22 and a half years and left there to do construction as a carpenter and then to do maintenance work at the trade school in Point Edward.
Upon retirement he continued to do the things he loved such as, camping, playing pool, watching boxing, woodworking, planting flowers and caring for his property.
Pat was a veteran of the Second World War, a third degree honorary lifelong member of 3209 KOC in New Waterford, a member of branch 12 legion in Sydney, a former member of Local 1588 Carpenter’s Union and of the New Waterford Pensioners’ Club.
He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 63 years, Mary Irene (Hervé) MacMillan, RN; three sons, Pat (Betty Anne), Lingan, Hervé (Margaret Ann), Mexico, Alexis John (Maribeth), Phillipines; grandchildren, Jennifer (Donnie) Hutchings, Sydney, Janis (Tim) Dimond, Alberta, Irene Alexis (Keith) Boutilier, New Waterford, and Alexis John, Phillipines; great-grandchildren, Parker and Pierce Hutchings and Alexis Erica Boutilier; brother, William (Dolores) MacMillan, Ontario; sister-in-law, Ellen MacMillan, New Glasgow; many nieces and nephews.
Pat was predeceased by brothers, Edward, Matthew and sister, Martha (Joe) MacKenzie.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Pat will take place Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Plummer Avenue, New Waterford.
Members of the KOC will assemble for a prayer service in the funeral home on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Pat resided at the Northside Guest Home for over a year and we were very grateful to the staff and administration for the care and dedication they gave to Pat.
