J. Chipman McCrea

McCREA, J. CHIPMAN - 1920 - 2011 - The passing of James Chipman McCrea M.D., C.M., son of the late Jesse Hugh McCrea and Mabel Florence (MacFarlane) McCrea of Moncton, NB took place at The Moncton Hospital on Monday June 6, 2011. His wife Phyllis (Law), his sister, and his two brothers predeceased him. Chipman arrived from Aberdeen High the year Moncton High opened and was MHS’s first graduate at age fifteen. From the University of New Brunswick he received a Bachelor of Arts degree and from McGill University he received his M.D., C.M. During his college years he was active in sports especially football / rugby. He served with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corp in Canada until his discharge with the rank of Captain in 1946. Chipman was honoured to receive the Canadian Volunteers Service Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Following his military service he worked for a period at the Moncton Tuberculosis Hospital and then as a Surgical Intern at the Queen Mary Hospital in Montreal. In 1948 he joined the medical staff of the Moncton Hospital where he served as a General Practitioner until he retired in 1996. He was a Past President of the medical staff of the Moncton Hospital and a past Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee. He was also a member of the Hotel Dieu Hospital Staff (now the Dr. Georges L. Dumont). He was a committed Christian and he strongly supported church and community organizations. Outside interests included reading, gardening, travel, boating, and lifelong study. He is survived by one daughter, Dr. Mary Catherine McCrea-Yee and her husband Dr Ted Yee of Benicia, CA, a son Michael and his wife Lynne, a son Graham and his wife Cheryl, a son Dr. John McCrea and Jamie Lundquist, all of Moncton. Six grandchildren survive: Christopher, Stephanie, Sarah, Robert Han, Miriam, and Jonathan.
Visitation at St. George’s Anglican Church, 51 Church St. on Friday June 10 from 6PM to 8PM. Funeral service in St. George’s Anglican Church at 11 AM on Saturday, June 11, 2011, with Rev. Chris VanBuskirk officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) in care of arrangements.
