Adele (Koch) Brandt was born November 4, 1911 on the family farm in the Wheatstone District in Saskatchewan. She was the second daughter of Maria and Joe Koch in a family of 12 children. Her older sister Adela had passed away prior to her birth. Her siblings were Frank, Augusta, Karl, Ludwig, Katharina, Elsa, Edward, Freda, and twin brothers, Joe and Ted. After completing grade 8 she remained on the family farm to help her father. On November 23, 1930, at 19 years of age, she married Richard Brandt and lived in the Kayville area. A year later Ed was born and Art followed two years later. She loved her boys. In 1936 Adele and her family moved to the Horizon area and resided there until 1950 when they moved to their farm next to the town of Readlyn. Adele’s whole life was filled with hard work; she cooked, cleaned, worked in the fields, had a huge garden, milked cows, raised ducks and chickens, hayed, and picked rock to name a few chores. Adele and Richard were married 36 years and living on the farm in Readlyn, SK when Richard was killed in a car accident which Adele survived. Her son Art returned to the farm in Readlyn with his family and Adele lived with them for about a year. In 1967 she got a job at a nursing home in Swift Current where she worked in the kitchen until 1976 when she retired and moved to Moose Jaw. Adele had a green thumb like no other; she could make anything grow. Her vegetable gardens produced more food than she could eat so she was constantly sharing her produce with family and friends. She was a faithful member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and attended regularly until her health would no longer allow it. She was a wonderful cook and her table always had people around it. Friends and visitors were invited and brought home after church to her table. They were always made to feel welcome and left full. She made poppyseed rolls, cabbage rolls, cinnamon buns, apple strudel, plum perogies and apple perogies. No one could make an apple pie like she did. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and quilting and many people still have and use her handiwork. Adele loved games -- yahtzee, scrabble, and tile rummy – she would play them for hours with her friends and family. Up until just recently she was still playing tile rummy with family and friends in Providence Place where she lived. Adele was a special lady. She was a kind, gentle, and patient woman, very strong and determined at the same time. She never spoke in anger or said anything negative about anyone. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She loved her family. One of her greatest joys was when her family came to visit and her family has many happy memories that will help them with the loss.
She leaves behind her sons, Ed and wife Evelyn; Art and wife Doris; grandchildren Brenda and husband Garnet Anderson and their children Brielle and Levi; Beverley and her husband Brian Nattress and their daughters, Mariah and Justine; Bonnie and husband Trevor Benson and daughter McKenna; Doug Brandt; and Shawney and her husband Brad Dobbin and their daughters Jacquelyn and Madison. She also leaves behind her three sisters, Kay Smith, Freda(Don) Ludtke, and Elsa(John)Lee, sisters-in-law Anne and Edna Koch many nieces and nephews as well as all that knew her loved her.
