September 29, 1929 – July 20, 2019 - Anna Catharina Halbersma – 89, of Kentville, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Wartena, Friesland, the Netherlands, she was the eldest daughter of the late Ruurd and Tietje (Postma) Van Dellen. She married her husband, Sybren in May of 1951. In May of 1954, with two young children, they boarded the Groote Beer to cross the Atlantic on their immigration journey to Canada. Landing in Quebec, they travelled by train to Nova Scotia and first settled in Elmsdale. In the following five years, they moved to many locations in the Annapolis Valley area and finally found a permanent home in Somerset where they spent the next thirty years. During that time, she raised her family and spent many seasons in the orchards picking apples and pears, accompanied by her faithful companion “Chippy”. Retirement found them on Lawrence Rd. in South Berwick and the time was spent landscaping and gardening on their property. She was a member of Covenanters ARP Church in Cambridge and enjoyed her involvement with them. Many pairs of feet were kept warm from socks that came off her knitting needles. She is survived by her children, Gauke “Gordon” (Juvy), Woodville; Theresa VanderTuin, Kentville; Rudy, Coldbrook; Peter, Barrie, Ont.; Grace (Bradley) Joudrey, Burlington; grandchildren, Lyla, Phillip (Jeannine), Byron (Angela), Leanne, Justin (Emily), William (Minji), Joseph, Alieda, Christian, Dineke and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Terrace, Trevin, Kaelan, Airlyn and Ailina; sisters, Metje, Martje, Griet and Maaike; brothers, Ruurd and Sietse; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was pre¬deceased by her husband of 64 years, Sybren; sisters, Elske, Griet (in infancy); brothers, Klaas, Johannes; son-in-law, Robert VanderTuin; daughter-in-law, Darlene Halbersma, several sisters and brothers-in-law. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2019 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2019 in Covenanters ARP Church, Cambridge, Kings County, with a reception following, Rev. Martin Dendekker officiating. Burial took place at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Kings County. Donations may be made to Canadian Presbyterian Missions in support of Tom and Sandra VanMaanen.
