With sadness, we announce the passing of Roderick J.D. (Sonny) MacCuish, 75, of Sydney Mines, on June 11, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, Dec. 2, 1935, he was the son of the late Roderick O. and Marguerite (Jardine) MacCuish.
He was a member and Elder of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, and also a member of St. Andrew’s Men’s Fellowship.
Roddie retired in 1992 after 41 years of service with the Cape Breton Development Corporation. Sonny’s endearing qualities of integrity and love of family and friends allowed him to live life to the fullest and enjoy many rich relationships.
He is survived by his wife, Christine (MacKenzie) MacCuish; and his children, John Milton MacCuish (Margo), Burlington, Ont., Judith MacCuish Ryan (Shaun), North Sydney, and Janice M. McLean (Darren), Brantford, Ont. Also left to mourn are his grandchildren, Roderick J.D. MacCuish, Carolyn Christine MacCuish, Burlington, Ont., Nathan R. Ryan, Marla M. Ryan, Matthew S. Ryan, North Sydney, Adam Patrick McLean, Richmond, B.C., and Nicole Christine McLean, Kelowna, B.C.; sisters, Merle K. MacCuish, Sydney Mines, and Joan A. MacLeod (Rev. Ian), Baddeck; brother-in-law, James Selfridge, Sydney Mines; sisters-in-law, Marla Clark (Marvin), Summerside, P.E.I., Carrie Lin Ng (Raymond), Toronto; and nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Sonny was predeceased by his sister, Audrey M. Selfridge.
Visitation for Roderick MacCuish will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Monday, June 13,) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place on Tuesday, at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Queen Street, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Marion Barclay MacKay officiating. The burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
