Frank Walker Grant passed peacefully in the DVA unit at Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton, on Monday, June 6, 2011 with two of his sisters present.
Frank was born in Dominion, Cape Breton, on Feb. 28, 1920 to the late John Edward and Annabel (Johnston) Grant. His early education was obtained in Dominion with further training and Diploma obtained through Red River College, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Frank was a veteran of the Second World War, working in the Signal Service as a Wireless Radio Operator. Frank was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal –with clasp-, the Defence Medal, and The War Medal. Following his war service, Frank worked the remainder of his career as a wireless radio operator. He worked in the Canadian far North on the DEW line, on research ships (the Baffin and the Vema and others). As well he was employed in the oil exploration industry on ocean going research and drill ships and fixed drill platforms. He loved to travel and went all over the world with his work and in leisure times as well.
Frank owned and operated a courier service in Dartmouth serving the Metro area. While he lived in Dartmouth and Halifax during his retirement years, failing health caused him to move from Joseph Howe Manor, Halifax to The Dept. of Veteran Affairs Unit in the Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Middleton, in 2005. He received professional and compassionate care from the entire staff. He enjoyed late night ‘chats’ with the staff whom he came to know very well. While living in Halifax, Frank was a very frequent visitor at the Halifax Library as he was a voracious reader. He could also be seen all over the city as he walked everywhere both as a means of transportation and for his health. When not immersed in a good book, a game of scrabble would be an acceptable substitute. Lively discussions of current affairs and politics were often held with his nephew, Munroe Eagles. Frank loved children and very much enjoyed spending time with nieces and nephews. Visits with his young relatives were always enjoyed. Although he moved from his birthplace of Cape Breton, he returned for visits many times and always was eager to hear of news of his home town, Dominion. Frank was predeceased by his parents and brother Robert ‘Bob’, a member of RCAF Ferry Command, who was lost in the Second World War.
He is survived by sisters, Jean Bennett (Robert, deceased), Sarnia, Ont.; Ethel Eagles (Donald, deceased), Berwick; Marjorie Morse (Murdock MacLean, deceased, Dr. Frank W. Morse, deceased), Berwick; three nieces, five nephews, great (and great, great) nieces and nephews as well as several cousins.
The family wishes to acknowledge, with heartfelt thanks, the outstanding friendship and care Frank received during his stay at the DVA Unit in Middleton.
Cremation has taken place. At Frank’s request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
