KELLY, Joseph Arthur "Joe" — 72, of Newport Corner, Hants County, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on December 11, 1938, he was a son of the late Maurice and Helen (Ettinger) Kelly. An avid outdoorsman, Joe enjoyed many hours fishing with lifelong friends, always with teasing advice on how to catch the big one and whose wife might cook it best. He was a founding member of the Hants County Pistol Club and a gunsmith for many years. Joe had the uncanny ability to fix anything, even if he made the part from an old file or a rusty nail. If he could draw it or have it drawn he could build it from metal or wood. Many a young hunters over the years have benefitted from his gift of a handmade knife with stag horn handles, a secret he shared with very few. All were one of a kind. Never was he heard to say "I can't fix that." Joseph spent over 40 years of his life as a truck driver working for several companies before retiring from Scotia Trucking, at the age of 65. Joe was predeceased by his devoted wife, Beverley Anne Nova (Dorey) Kelly; brother, Lewis Kelly. He is survived by son, Bruce E. and Kelly (Frizzell), Newport Corner; daughter Jo-Anne N. Kelly, Newport Corner; special friend and companion, Edna Best, Newport Corner; chosen son, our "brother" Barry Romo. He shared a deep bond with his always-seeking and forever-loyal dog Max. Arrangements for cremation were entrusted to Lohnes-DeMont Funeral and Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor, where the family received visitors from 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 3. A service celebrating Joe's life was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 4 in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Bill Gibson officiated. A reception immediately followed in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre, with burial taking place at a later date. Donations may be made in his memory to the Canadian Cancer Society — N.S. Division, 1-5826 South St., Halifax, NS, B3H 9Z9, or the Hants County SPCA, P.O. Box 2274, Windsor, NS, B0N 2T0.
