Teresa Mary (O’Reilly) Murphy, R.N.
Lieu de naissance : Terre-Neuve, Canada
Lieu de décès : Terre-Neuve, Canada
Date de décès : 7 septembre 2009
September 22, 1921 - September 7, 2009). It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful departure from this life of Teresa at St. Luke’s Homes on Monday, September 7, 2009, formerly of Fox Harbour, Placentia Bay. She is predeceased by her parents John O’Reilly and Ellen Healey, her husband Capt. Maurice Murphy (1976) and daughter Sheila (1953). Leaving to mourn with joyous and loving memories: Maurice, Marie (Garry Dymond), Bill (Nellie), Anne Marie (Mike Whelan), Patricia (Nigel Muter) and special niece Sheila (Bill O’Reilly); also grandchildren: Paula (Mark Picco), Kimberley, Bill, Jennifer, Tracy, Mark, Benjamin, Laura and great-grandchildren: Ty and Drew, along with many other relatives and friends. After graduation from St. Clare’s School of Nursing in 1945, Teresa began her career as a District nurse in such places as Markland, Lamaline and Big Paradise. This most often required frequent travel by open motor boat or dory to other remote communities, to deliver babies, pull teeth or administer drugs to the sick and suffering. It was not uncommon for the boat operator to heat up a few rocks for the nurse and give her a blanket to keep her feet warm or cover her in oil skins to protect her from the elements during her journey. After moving back to St. John’s, Teresa continued her career as a nurse at St. Clare’s, The Fever Hospital, the Orthopedic Hospital and The Sanatorium, and finally retiring from the VON in 1984. She continued to maintain an active lifestyle, participating in gym and swim, singing in choirs, traveling (especially to St. Anne de Beaupre) and visits to her treasured Cabin. Even then, nursing was still paramount in who she was, with visits to the sick and infirmed and bringing them companionship, and of course her homemade tea buns. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and continued to drive her own car to deliver meals to “the old peopleâ€, even into her early eighties. Teresa is resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, with visitation on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, September 5th, at 1:30 p.m. from St. Teresa’s Church. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated, however donations in her memory to the Alzheimer\'s Society of Canada or to St. Luke\'s Homes would be preferred.
