Bruce Edward Spicer - 84, formerly of Canning, Kings County, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Canning on August 4, 1926, he was the son of the late Cecil and Kathleen (Crowell) Spicer. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the army for two and a half years. When he was discharged from the army, he joined the Royal Canadian Legion, Habitant Branch No. 73 in 1946 and was a life member at the time of his death. The year 1949 was an important year for Bruce, he married Wilda Taylor in March and went to work for Superline Oils (later with PetroFina, then Petro Canada and retired in 1991 after 42 years). Bruce and Wilda bought their Canning home at 9644 Borden Street, where they resided and raised their family. Bruce joined the Canning Volunteer Fire Department and was a member for 31 years, including serving as Fire Chief for 16 years and in his senior years, became an honourary member. He served for 20 years on the Canning Village Water Commission. Bruce was a lifetime member of the Fieldwood Heritage Society. He was involved in fundraising for the Canning Glooscap Arena, the Canning Library, the Legion and the Fire Department. He also worked diligently to get the Canning river bank (behind the stores on Main Street) shored up. Bruce then went on working to build a small park on the east end of the waterfront, which he named Canning’s Historical Shipyard Park and was later named Bruce Spicer Park in his honour. He loved Canning and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of Canning’s history, which makes Bruce Spicer Park an appropriate legacy.
