OXNER, Donald Clyde, 76, Shelburne, passed away peacefully in Roseway Hospital, Tuesday, June 14, 2011. Born in Halifax on July 2, 1934, he was the eldest son of the late Wilbert Clyde and Genivieve Louise (Grant) Oxner. Don and his former wife, Janet, resided for many years in the Middleton area and brought up their three children there. Don was involved with the Middleton Town Council and the Middleton Lions Club during that time. Don married Carol in August of 1992 and moved to their home in Upper Sandy Point. He was a rather quiet, serious man who was devoted to his family and was happiest when working around home. He enjoyed the sailboats, ships, sunsets, and swimming afforded by our beautiful harbour. He worked as a maintenance person for the Shelburne Regional Housing Authority, and residents of the various units may well remember him with affection. Don was always interested in cars and vehicles of all kinds, and before his illness enjoyed visits to Huskilson’s Chrysler in Shelburne for coffee and a chat with Graham regarding the new models. He always noted the new colours, particularly the various shades of red. Before retiring in 2000, Don was employed by Hogg’s Trucking of Middleton as a broker/courier in the Shelburne area. In 2007, he and Carol moved to Shelburne town. Don is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Carol (Watt) Stuart Oxner; sons, Grant (Debra Franz), Rose Bay, and Gregory, Middleton; daughter, “Gidget” (John McAssey), PEI; step-daughter, Shauna Stuart (Ken Dean), Dartmouth; grandson Connor McAssey; granddaughters, Tasha and Devrie Oxner, and their mother Cheryl Mason; brother, “Mick” Oxner (Bonnie Parks), Sheet Harbour; former wife, Janet Wood, the mother of his children; several nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Stanley of Moncton. A very special thank you to Dr. Mark Riley and the many wonderful nurses and caregivers at Roseway Manor and Roseway Hospital. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. A memorial service was held in Trinity United Church, Shelburne, on Saturday, June 18 with Rev. Joanne McFadden officiating. Interment of ashes was in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Roseway Hospital Charitable Foundation Fund, Roseway Manor Inc., the Alzheimer’s Society of N.S or a charity of choice.
