Thomas Mountan
It is with heavy hearts and the deepest of sadness that I announce the passing of my dear Dad, Thomas Robert Mountan, 84, Lorneville. He passed peacefully with me by his side once again reuniting with my mom where I know they shared a big embrace and a beautiful dance on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19, 2011 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan.
Born on February 18, 1927 in Lexington, Massachusetts, USA, he was a son of the late Thomas O. and Hilda M. (Walker) Mountan.
He was known to be a jack of all trades; he served with the Halifax Fire Department from February 1, 1957 to November 1, 1974 where he met many of his lifelong friends. Tom was the owner of Bayview Flooring and a real master of the trade and was known by a few close friends as “Bucktile.” He was known by many for his love and passion of horses, throughout the standard bred race horse circuit, where he won the Gold Cup and Saucer Race in Charlottetown, PEI many years ago. He was also well known throughout the light horse and pony circuit, where he spent many years travelling around the Maritime Provinces with his daughter Kim. Every spring Tom looked forward to hitting the clam flats with his buddies behind the house in Lorneville, where after the big dig they would gather in the shop, tip a smile to their mouth and share lots of stories, jokes and bragged about their catch. Dad had such a great sense of humour and was always there for anyone who needed a helping hand. He took such pride in the beautiful vegetable garden he would grow each year and his kind generosity would find him sharing it with family and friends.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Kim (Carl Wright) Reyno, Westville, NS and Beverly Mooney, Halifax, NS; grampy will be sadly missed by the three apples of his eyes, Farrah (Bo) Sayles, Calgary, AB, Robert Reyno, Westville, NS and Kent (Bobbie-Jo) Austin, Fall River, NS; his six beautiful great grandchildren, Andrew Mooney, Julia Mooney and Gabriel Sayles Calgary, AB and Alexia Mosher, Kennedy Austin, and MacKenzie Austin, Fall River, NS; Tom will be sadly missed by his brother and sisters, Guy “Bud”(Marion), Bowser, BC, Betty (Frank) Burns, Wendy Oulton, both of Amherst; sister in law, Muriel Robertson, Truro, NS, Pearl Gallant, Amherst and brother in law, Jan vanHemert, Toronto, ON; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Tom was predeceased by his loving wife and best friend, the former Gwendolyn Fullerton; and brother, William “Bill.”
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906)
The funeral service will celebrated on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from Lorneville United Church in Lorneville. Interment will take place in the Lorneville Cemetery beside his wife. A time of sharing and refreshments will follow in the church basement.
