Date de décès : 28 juin 2011

SWAN, Basil Anderson, P. Eng. – Loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on June 28, 2011, after fighting his battle with complications due to surgery for colon cancer. He did this with his signature patience and unwavering strength, with the love and support of his family by his side. He will always be missed by his wife of 58 years, Delena; children, Brian, David (Cathy), Robert (Kathy), Gordon (Cathy) and Cindy Swan-MacDonald (Eugene); grandchildren, Shawn, Amy, Jesse, Gavin, David, Christopher, Emily, Aaron and Kayla; five great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends. He is survived by his brother, Paul (Janet) and has joined his father, James Albert; mother, Letitia (nee McGill); brothers, Calvin and Ian; sister, Enid Gallagher. Although born and raised on a farm in Debert, Nova Scotia, Basil’s journey in life took him well beyond his rural Nova Scotia roots starting with training as a tool and die maker at Nova Scotia Tech, then as Petty Officer on a corvette in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWll. After the end of WWll, Basil completed his high school diploma in Pictou and then combined his veteran’s benefits with a scholarship to further his education in Mechanical Engineering at McGill University in Montreal. After graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering from McGill (class of 1951), he worked in increasingly more responsible engineering and management professional positions in heavy industrial manufacturing for 26 years in Montreal followed by a return to his native province of Nova Scotia for the final 12 years of his professional career in New Glasgow until retirement in 1989. Upon retirement, Basil returned to Truro to be closer to family and friends. During retirement, Basil kept himself busy with his hobby of rebuilding cars, reading and being with his extended family. His intelligence, education, worldly experiences, coolness under pressure and kind heart provided the basis for guidance to his children throughout their lives and will continue to do so long into the future. On Basil’s behalf, his family would like to thank all of those who were instrumental in providing comfort and support during his last weeks. An evening for visitations will be held at Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, on Friday July 1, 2011, from 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Debert Baptist Church, Pastor Bill Martin officiating. Interment will be held in Main Road Cemetery, Debert. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation. On-line condolences can be sent to: cindy.r.swan@gmail.com
