Collier, George Louis “Louâ€- 72, Bible Hill, passed away September 14, 2009 in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, NS, after a short illness. Born in St. Albans, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late George and Maria (Hoskins) Collier. He is survived by his wife, Marie McCully Collier; daughter, Paula Collier (Remi Pietilainen), Vendee, Quebec; granddaughters, Alina, Tanya and Kelsey Pietilainen; brothers, William Donald “Don†(Ellen), Edmonton, Alberta, Amos (Myrna), Halifax, Anthony Melvin “Tony†(Wendy), Edmonton, Alberta, Bruce George (Cloie), Kippins, NL; sister, Brenda Martin (William Hartery Jr.), St. Albans, NL; several nieces and nephews. After graduating from Saint Bonaventure College in St. Johns, NL, “Big Lou†travelled the world, beginning with ten years of military service in the Canadian Guards that took him to Germany, the Congo and Cypress. He then began his sea travels, working for a number of shipping companies, including Upper Lakes Shipping, Texaco Canada Ltd. and Imperial Oil Canada Ltd. where he achieved his Marine Motor Certificate as a Marine Engineer. He was an accomplished machinist, welder, fitter, and boilermaker. Twenty five years ago he settled in Bible Hill and began to learn woodworking. His clocks, rocking chairs and model schooners are enjoyed by many. Three years ago he decided to learn how to play the fiddle and was thoroughly enjoying learning to play his favourite Cape Breton tunes. Lou was a strong man, full of life and energy. He accomplished what he wanted to do with brain and/or brawn, regardless of the obstacles he might have encountered. He was a lover of all animals, and especially enjoyed his pets at home. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends who knew and appreciated his larger than life presence. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 18th from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm, when a celebration of Lou’s life will be held in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. Rev. Ebbie W. Snow will officiate with a reception to follow. Interment in Onslow Island Cemetery. No flowers by request.
