With saddened hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of our cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Maurice Edward MacDonald.
Maurice died peacefully Saturday, July 2, 2011, at his home on Steelworkers Lane at Harbourstone Enhanced Care, where he resided for the past four years. He was a former resident of 12 Hospital Rd., Edwardsville.
He was born in Victoria County on Oct. 18, 1922, and was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Morrison) MacDonald.
He was a faithful adherent of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney. Maurice was always very ambitious and was self-employed for many years in the forestry industry.
Maurice was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Janie (George) MacRae, brothers, Willard MacDonald, Kenny (Annie) MacDonald and Donnie MacDonald and stepdaughter, Valerie Chartrand.
Left to mourn with loving memories are his wife of 31 years, Mary (Yeo) (Arsenault); daughters, Karen (Walter) MacKenzie, Brampton, Ont., and Christine (Freeman) Reynolds, Nipawin, Sask. He will always be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Murnell (Garan) Yablon and Christopher (Christy) MacKenzie and his great-grandchildren, Brayden, C.J., Elijah, Elliot and Olivia MacKenzie and Grayson and Alyssa Yablon.
Maurice was also a kind and loving father to his stepchildren, Mary Lou (Tom) Stobbs, St. Albert, Alta., John (Ruth) Arsenault, Westmount, and Corinne (Kurt) Albiez, Lethbridge, Alta.; as well as his step son-in-law, Lloyd Chartrand, Coxheath.
Papa Maurice will also be lovingly remembered by his step-grandchildren, Derek (Sabine) Stobbs, Terry (Krista) Stobbs, Katie (Craig) Hodder, Johnny (Kaitlain) Chartrand, Mary Chartrand, Mark (Rachael) Albiez, Jamie Albiez, Byron Albiez and their families.
Also left to mourn are his first wife, Murdena MacDonald, North Sydney; sister-in-law, Ethel MacDonald, Baddeck; as well as several nieces and nephews who always held a special place in Maurice’s heart. Maurice was a kind and gentle man who was always a pleasure to be around. He was very social and always enjoyed going to dances and playing a good game of cards. His spirit will live in the hearts of his family and friends whom he cherished.
For the past four years, Maurice’s home has been at Harbourstone Enhanced Care where he continued to enjoy the good company of family and friends and made many new friends with the residents and staff there. Maurice’s family want to acknowledge the amazing staff and facilities at Harbourstone Enhanced Care. The respect, dignity and most of all the love they freely displayed is etched in our hearts forever. Thank you very much for all you have done to ensure his quality of life.
There will be no visitation. The funeral service will take place at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, on Thursday, July 7 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Lyle presiding. Burial to follow at Harbour View Cemetery, South Haven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society or to Steelworkers Lane, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, 84 Kenwood Dr., Sydney, N.S., B1S 1T6 or to a charity of choice.
