Edna Alice (Farquhar) MacDougall of Sydney passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness, with her family by her side.
She was a member of United Baptist Church in Sydney.
Born in Sydney, N.S., Edna was the daughter of the late Frank and Alice (Musgrave) Farquhar.
She is survived by her daughter, Eleanor MacDougall (Al Wight), Wellington, N.S.; son, Kenny (Anne) MacDougall, Sydney; grandchildren, Keith MacDougall, Fort McMurray, Alta., and Janine MacDougall, Sydney. Edna is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Edna was predeceased by her husband, Raymond in 1972, sisters, Irene and Eleanor and brother, Francis.
In 1941, Edna graduated from Jeffrey Hale School of Nursing, Quebec City. From 1943 until the war ended in 1945, she served overseas in the Navy with the ‘Nursing Sisters’. She was stationed in Halifax, Sydney and overseas in Newfoundland. Following the war, Edna returned to Cape Breton and joined the staff of the TB Hospital in Point Edward from which she retired as director of nursing in 1976. After retirement, Edna worked in the real estate industry in Sydney for several years. She enjoyed life to the fullest and in later years, loved her many trips with friends and family. Edna was always ready with purse in hand for ‘that little drive in the car’.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, Sept. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will take place in the chapel 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, with Darius Powell officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
In lieu flowers, memorials may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or a charity of one’s choice.
