It is with broken hearts, that we the family, announce the peaceful passing of a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great great-grandmother and sister on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at her residence on 5th Street in the Hub.
Born in Glace Bay, Liz was the daughter of the late James and Maria (Boone) Thomas.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Glace Bay. Liz was very active in her parish and was a member of the ladies guild. She organized many fundraisers to support the church. Liz was a ‘Nana’ to everyone and will be remembered for her compassionate nature and good sense of humour.
Liz leaves to mourn her loving and devoted children, daughters, Florence (Bill Gracie), Suzanne Gracie; chosen son, Eugene and Shirleon Burta; son-in-law, Joe O’Brien. Liz is survived by her brothers, Pete (Joan), Jimmie, Aubrey and Terry (Mary) Thomas; and a sister, Gloria Burta. Also surviving are several grandchildren, Belinda Oliver, Kelli, Allan Hillier, Earl and Tanya Gracie, Billie and Kathy Gracie, Tammy and Dennis Borden, Shelly and Allan White, Sherry and Ed MacDonald, Todd and Ann O’Brien, Jamie O’Brien, Melissa Burta, Jack and Tabatha Burta, Jimmie and Theresa Burta. Liz will be sadly missed by many great and great great-grandchildren; best friends, Sr. Sylvia Bellefontaine and Liz Pemberton; special niece, Thelma Burta who lived with Liz for 16 years; sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Audrey Thomas.
She was predeceased by her husband, Earl McNeil, daughter, Dottie O’Brien, special granddaughter, Rose Marie Gracie, sister, Rosie MacKenzie, brothers, Sandy and Bill Thomas; brother-in-law, Daniel MacKenzie.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Leo Boone will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. in St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall.
As an expression of sympathy for Liz, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Unit or a charity of one’s choice.
