– After a brief battle with cancer, Reg passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on September 10, 2009 at the age of 61. Born in St. John’s, NL on May 13, 1948, he is survived and dearly missed by his wife, Noreen (O’Keefe) Bonnell of Fredericton, NB; his mother, Bernice (Dunne) Bonnell of St. John’s, NL; and his sons: Ian (Angela) Bonnell of Moncton, NB and Darryl Bonnell of AB; his step-children: Russell Hogue of Canmore, AB and Kathleen Hogue of Saint John, NB; two sisters: Vickie (Al) Brown of Fort McMurray, AB and Ivy (Rob) Hoffman of Sherwood Park, AB, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; cousins and numerous special friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his sister, Donna MacIntyre (1991), and his father, Reg (2002). Reg had a life-long and distinguished career in education. He was principal of the Canadian International School in Beijing, China, previously worked in Fredericton, NB, at District 18 office, was principal of Leo Hayes High School, 2000-2006, Principal of Priestman Street School 1998-2000, Vice-Principal of George Street School 1997-98, and in Newfoundland, was Professional Development Staff Officer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association for 11 years until 1997, and before that, worked with the Avalon North School Board in Spaniard’s Bay, NL, and taught in Cow Head, NL. Devoted to his wife, family and education, Reg also had a passion for motorcycle riding, having been a rider since he was 16 years old – and in 2003 purchased his dream bike, a red Honda Goldwing 1800. The final resting place will be at Forest Road Anglican Cemetery - Saturday morning (September 19) at 11 am. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Reg’s life at a Memorial Reception that will take place on Saturday afternoon in St. John’s at the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA) Building, 3 Kenmount Road from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada in memory of Reg.
