CROFT (HILL) MABEL E. - 1918 - 2011 - Mabel Elizabeth (née MacKay) Croft (Hill) passed away peacefully on the morning of July 12 at the Sylvan Health Centre at Regency Oaks, in Clearwater, Florida. Mabel was born in Newcastle, New Brunswick on September 6th, 1918 to the late Hannah and Alex MacKay. Mabel studied nursing at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. She married Earle William Croft (also from Newcastle, NB) on August 10th, 1939. The young couple first lived in Montreal where their daughter Sandra was born, then moved back to the Miramichi where their daughter Cheryl was born. Over the course of Earle’s career they were also transferred to Hillsborough, Hampton, and Sackville NB. When he retired as manager from Scotiabank, Mabel opened a gift shop called "The Crofter" downtown. Throughout Mabel’s entire life, she spent summers in Bay du Vin Beach, NB, in a cottage built by her father on the shores of the idyllic Miramichi Bay (Mabel’s dearest place). Earle passed away in July 1980. In 1987 Mabel Married George Hill from Clearwater, and made Florida her permanent home. Throughout her life Mabel has enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge, golfing, sewing, knitting and painting. She was a dedicated volunteer worker within various charities, and a faithful supporter of the church. Mabel is predeceased by her parents, her siblings (Douglas, Jack, Gordon, Alice and Ronald MacKay), her first husband Earle, and her second husband George. She leaves behind two daughters, Sandra Elizabeth Dawson (Ottawa), and Cheryl Dawn Wilson (Halifax), four grandchildren (Susan and Brent Dawson, and D’Arcy and Caitlin Wilson), and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her stepdaughter Patty (Hill) Skinner (and Don) in Georgia, and their extended family. She will be missed her dear companion William Raffaniello, many cherished friends at Regency Oaks as well as here in Canada. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, a caring friend, and as someone with a joy for life. A memorial service will be held later in the summer in Newcastle, NB; the details are yet to be announced. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
