It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Sheldon ‘Poppie’ McNeil, 77, of Reserve Mines. Shelly passed away Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (MacKenzie) McNeil.
Shelly was a member of Gordon United Church, Reserve Mines. He was employed as a coal miner for many years. He coached hockey and baseball. He had a great sense of humour and always enjoyed a good joke.
He will be sadly missed by daughter, Betty Flint, New Waterford; son, Sheldon (Diane) McNeil, Reserve Mines; cherished grandchildren, Lawrence, Denise (who was by his side through his illness); grandsons, Stephen and Daniel McNeil and great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Kristyn.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Annie Rose (Burns), brothers, Roy, Earl, Gerald, and sister, Audrey.
In honoring Shelly's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Donations in Shelly's memory may be made to Cape Breton Regional Cancer Treatment Centre or the Lung Association.
