Joann Courtney

COURTNEY, Joann M. – 70, passed away quietly in her home in Tyngsboro, Mass. on January 23, 2011. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Raynold and Gladys (O'Rourke) Melanson. Joann spent most of her “growing up” years in Parrsboro. Many will remember her as a young majorette in the Parrsboro Citizen's Band. She shared her father's love for cars. Joann moved to the Boston area in 1962 and was employed with Massachusetts State Health Board. She met and married the love of her life, Peter Courtney and they enjoyed many summers at their treasured holiday home in Two Islands, near Parrsboro. Her greatest hobby was collecting antiques and roaming flea markets where Pete patiently accompanied her and eventually his interest peaked! She is survived by her daughter, Shelley Dow (Rob), Parrsboro; a son, Tyler Courtney, Westford, Mass.; a sister, Nancy Curleigh (Colin), Parrsboro; sister-in-law, Dora (Sheck) Melanson, Hubbards; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great-nephews and her “special” goddaughter, Sara (Curleigh) Parsons, London, England. Joann was predeceased by her husband, Peter in 2004; a brother, Byron; sisters, Geraldine (Canning) and Jeanie (Smith). The committal service for Joann will take place jointly with her sister Geraldine on Saturday, July 30 at St. Brigid’s Cemetery, following the funeral mass for her sister Geraldine at 11:00 a.m. A reception will be held at St. Brigid's Hall to celebrate the lives of both sisters. Memorial donations in Joann's memory may be made to the St. Brigid's Church Cross Replacement Fund or to a charity of choice. Arrangements entrusted to Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro.
