Archibald 'Archie' Clarke
Lieu de naissance : SYDNEY, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de naissance : 17 mars 1916
Lieu de décès : SYDNEY, Nouvelle Ecosse, Canada
Date de décès : 18 juillet 2011
Four months after his 95th birthday, Archie Clarke passed away peacefully Monday, July 18, 2011, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility where he resided. Recently, after consultation with his family and caregivers, he directed his medical treatments be stopped.
In 1981, Archie retired from the steel plant where he was a general foreman in the blast furnace department. He was a long-time member of the Holy Redeemer Men’s Club, and the Knights of Columbus. More recently, he was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, where he served at funerals well into his 80s.
He was also an avid trout fisherman, having spent 25 summers in his trailer at Lake Ainslie. While he golfed and bowled in his younger years, his favourite escape was in reading westerns. Quiet and personable, he will be remembered for his sense of irony and unexpected witty remarks. Archie’s family hope that all will take comfort in his courageous decision and sense of fulfilment.
Born in Sydney, Archie was the son of the late Linus and Mary Ann (Gillis) Clarke and will be happily remembered by his two daughters, Karen Campbell (Steve), Moncton, N.B., Janet Porter (Jack) and son, Wayne (Betty), Sydney; he was “Grampie” to six grandchildren, Andrew (Beth), Riverview, N.B., Stewart (Leslie), Framingham, Mass., Gordon (Marlene), Grand Bay-Westfield, N.B. and Lawren (Lynn) Campbell, Moncton, N.B., James, Guelph, Ont., and Chad Clarke, Halifax, N.S.; eight great-grandchildren, Brett, Mackenzie, Curran, Lachlan, Rowan, Chloe, Benson and Ellie Campbell and several nieces and nephews.
The surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by sisters, Kathleen Johnson, Cassie Gillis, Florence Burnett, Elizabeth Gillis and Rita Keefe, and brothers, John and Leo.
The subject of his devotion for 70 years, his wife, Jennie, passed away last November.
Archie’s family, Karen, Wayne, Janet, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren truly appreciate the support and condolences received during this time. Thank you to the staff and doctors of the Renal Dialysis Clinic and Unit. A very special thank you to the doctors and staff of Fisherman’s Cove, Harbourstone Enhanced Care. As with their care of Jennie, not enough could be said.
No visitation as per Archie’s request. A memorial mass will take place at St. Anthony Daniel Church on Friday 10 a.m., with Rev. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
