It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather and brother, Elmer Chalmers Robertson, 79, a resident of Big Bras d’Or on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born in Florence, he was a son of the late William and Margaret (Marr) Robertson.
Elmer spent most of his life on the water as a lobster fisherman and pilot boat operator. He was a jack of all trades and a top notch carpenter and he spent many long hours in his sawmill. After his retirement he kept himself busy with his beloved horses and was a former member of the Cape Breton Draft Horse Association. He was an avid fiddle and guitar player since the age of eight. He was quite the entertainer and he and Sakey played host to numerous kitchen parties over the years. A great highlight of his life was meeting Natalie MacMaster. Elmer could make you laugh in a heartbeat, we will miss his wonderful sense of humor and ability to make a joke of pretty much anything.
Elmer is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Jean ‘Sakey’ (Davidson) Robertson; four daughters, Daria Beddow, Englishtown, Sharon Robertson, North Sydney, Carlee (Glenn) MacAskill, Bras d’Or, Lisa (Garry) MacNeil, Millville; nine grandchildren, Corrie, Shawna and Justin (Amy) Beddow, Joel (Natasha) Robertson, Jacob, Noah and Emily MacAskill, Benjamin and Gabriel MacNeil; also nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Millie Campbell, Big Bras d’Or; and a brother, John (Pat) Robertson, North Sydney.
He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Robertson and a sister, Jean Marriott.
Visitation for Elmer will be held 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday from St. John United Church, Big Bras d’Or, with Rev. Sean Handcock officiating. Burial to follow at Black Rock Cemetery.
