Eliza Jane MacLean, 101, of Neil’s Harbour, N.S., Victoria County, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the Buchanan Memorial Health Centre.
She was born on Aug. 17, 1908, in Dingwall, Victoria County, the daughter of the late Caleb and Sarah (Duggan) Fitzgerald.
She is survived by a son, Angus (Stella) MacLean, Coldbrook, Kings County; grandchildren, Valerie (Hilton) Wood, Winnipeg, Denise Bailey, Oshawa, Ont., Jeffrey MacLean, Bristol, N.B., Claude Rideout, Halifax, Michael (Pauline) Rideout, Bedford, HRM, Murray (Margaret) Rideout, Neil’s Harbour, Sherry (Eric) Chiasson, Bedford, David (Sherry) Rideout, New Haven; 13 great-grandchildren and also by special brother, Mike (Jessie) Fitzgerald, Dingwall, Victoria County.
She was predeceased by her husband, Archie (1958), daughter, Annette (2009), brothers, John, Murray, Emery, Alex, Freeman and Pat, sisters, Abbie, Sadie, Freda and special sister, Margaret.
Archie and Eliza operated a general store, post office, government telegraph and telephone office for many years. She was active in community affairs but found working with the hospital auxiliary the most satisfying. Nan was renowned for her detailed memory of persons and events from the distant past. She enjoyed knitting, solving crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. Much gratitude is due to the staff of the Highland Manor, Neil’s Harbour, for their quality care and thoughtfulness over the past few years. Thanks to also extended to grandson, Murray and wife, Margaret, with whom Nana lived for many years.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the All Soul’s Chapel, Neil’s Harbour. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church, Neil’s Harbour, with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating, followed by burial in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
