It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Donald Joseph MacNeil of Christmas Island. Donnie was born Nov. 27, 1941, in Benacadie, C.B., and passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011. He was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Campbell) MacIntyre.
He is survived by his wife, Mary (Roberts) MacNeil; his sisters, Peggy (Lauchie) MacDonald, Sydney Forks, Leona (Norman) MacIntyre, Westmount; brothers, Dougal (Lucene) MacIntyre, Howie Centre, Michael (Anne) MacIntyre, Boston, Frank (Theresa) Doucette, Blacketts Lake; as well as many much loved nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his adoptive parents, Martina and Roddie MacNeil, uncle, John MacNeil and his sister, Catherine (Jimmy) Farrell.
Donnie drove a school bus in Christmas Island from 1968 until his retirement in December 2006. He loved his job and the children who drove with him. His comment about the students was always that they were terrific kids. He raised beef cattle most of his life and was well known for the beautiful animals in his pasture as well as his cherished pets Dundee and Denver. He was a lifelong member of the Christmas Island Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan and thoroughly enjoyed the weekly card games with the boys. A recent Appreciation Night in his honour was a testament to how much he was loved and respected in the community.
Visitation and funeral service will be held at St. Barra’s Church in Christmas Island. Visitation will be Aug. 3 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m., the funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 4 at 1 p.m.
