Audrey Tory, age 78, of Sackville, passed away at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, after a long period of poor health.
Born in Dymond Township, Temiskaming District, Ont., she was the daughter of Russel and Gertrude (Rice) Upton. An excellent student, she achieved the highest average in the 1949 Grade 13 provincial examinations. She went on to attend McMaster University, supporting herself by scholarships, summer jobs, and part-time work as a demonstrator in chemistry laboratories. Graduating with honours, she worked as a chemist at the Mines Branch in Ottawa and the Aluminum Company of Canada in Arvida (now part of Saguenay), Que.. She later obtained two degrees in Psychology and worked as a psychometrist in the school system until 1992.
At various times, Audrey was active in several organizations (often as treasurer) including the Unitarian Church, Amnesty International, the Canadian Association of University Women, and the NDP. Most recently, she was spearheading a campaign for better reception of CBC Moncton.
She will be sadly missed by her husband Elmer, her son Kevin (Christine) and her grandson Michael. She was predeceased by her parents and her daughter Heather.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB (506-364-1300). A gathering of remembrance will take place at Live Bait Theatre from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Those wishing to make a donation in Audrey’s memory may do so to Salem Elementary School (payable to the Minister of Finance) or the charity of their choice.
