It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Colleen Campbell, 53, at her home in River Ryan surrounded by her loving family.
Born and raised in New Victoria, she was the daughter of Michael and the late Margaret ‘Peggy’ Campbell.
Colleen is survived by her three sisters, Sharon (Greg MacMaster), New Victoria, N.S., Bernadette Campbell, Hamilton, Ont., Lorraine (Raymond MacDonald), River Ryan, N.S.; seven brothers, Michael (Jane), Elko, Nevada, Robbie (Alana), Cole Harbour, N.S., Bruce (Ann), Scotchtown, N.S., George (Susan), Scotchtown, N.S., Blaise (Joann), Timberlea, N.S., Hector (Tracey), Brantford, Ont., and Glen (Liza), New Waterford, N.S.
Colleen was predeceased by her sister, Mary Blenkhorn in 1995, maternal grandparents, John O. and Mary MacNeil and paternal grandparents, Russell and Susan Campbell.
Colleen devoted her entire adult life to nursing, having worked as an RN for 33 years. After her graduation from The Halifax Infirmary, she began her career in Prince Rupert, B.C. and Burnaby, B.C., where she worked for 10 years. After that she moved to Hamilton, Ont. where she worked for 23 years at Hamilton General Hospital. She worked up until 2009 when her cancer returned for a second time.
When Colleen’s illness returned her desire was to move back to her beloved Cape Breton. In May 2011 she took up residence in River Ryan.
Upon her return to Cape Breton, she greatly enjoyed her drives along the shore with her sisters and her opportunity to be near the ocean. She loved the Cape Breton culture and music and in June she was able to attend the Cape Breton Summertime Revue. In her last week she went to the ocean in New Victoria with her brother, Blaise and at the time her life had truly come full circle.
In tribute to a wonderful nurse:
There’s a special beauty witnessed
Everyday within your role
As you care for all your patients
As you meet each nursing goal,
In this role you made a difference
One that goes beyond just care
Goes beyond the role of Nursing
To a special gift you shared.
There will be no visitation. By request Colleen has donated her body to the Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anatomy at Dalhousie University. There will be a memorial mass to celebrate Colleen’s life at the Parish of St. Leonard (Mount Carmel) with Fr. Ray Huntley on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. with a reception to follow at St. Leonard’s Hall, Convent Street.
Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
The Campbell motto states: Ne Obliviscaris which means - Forget Not. Colleen will never be forgotten by her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, special friend, Pat Shipley, large extended family and by the many people she cared for during her life.
Until we meet again - we love you!
