CHRISTIE, SHIRLEY ALTHEA (YOUNG)
January 3, 1936 - August 7, 2011
A life well lived - A much loved daughter,
sister, sister-in-law, wife, aunt, cousin and friend to many.
Surrounded by her loving family, the death of Shirley A. Christie of Harvey, NB wife of Phillip R. Christie, occurred August 7, 2011 at Wauklehegan Manor, McAdam, NB, her residence for over two years. Alzheimer’s took its toll over the last few years and the family would like to acknowledge the absolutely wonderful staff of Wauklehegan Manor for their loving care of Shirley and the wonderful support given to her family. A special thank you to nurse Judy, who remained with Shirley, holding her hand, until the very end.
Shirley was born in Fredericton, NB, a daughter of Beatrice (Gillespie) Young and the late Arthur Young. She graduated from Teachers College - Home Economics Program, as one of the proud Home Ec’ers Class of 1956. She earned her Education Degree from UNB, Fredericton in 1976. Shirley’s passion for education kept her teaching for 35 years at Harvey and McAdam High Schools as head of the Home Economics Department. She was actively involved in the NBTA and the NBHEA until her retirement in 1991. She was an active member of the Elm City Quilters Guild.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 53 years, Phillip Christie; her mother, Beatrice Young, Thomaston Corner, NB; a sister, Maxine Young, Saint John, NB; a brother, David Young (Sheila), Nackawic, NB; a niece, Jennifer Young, Alberta; two nephews, Jeff Young and his daughter Hilary, and Jamie Young; two aunts, Dawn Marie Carr (Edgar), Millinocket, ME and Janet Donaher, Moncton, NB; one uncle, Willard Gillespie (Madelon), Thomaston Corner, NB; several cousins.
Visiting hours will be held at Swan Funeral Home, 1826 Route 3, Harvey Station, NB on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel. Interment at Harvey Settlement Cemetery.
