It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Rudy Aubrecht, 78, on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Rudy was born in Sydney Mines on Sept. 21, 1932, and lived his entire life there before residing at the guest home. Rudy was the son of Anne Aubrecht, Montreal, and was raised as a son by his Czechoslovakian immigrant grandparents, the late John and Maria (Rotava) Aubrecht. He was a member of Carman United Church, Sydney Mines. In his younger years, Rudy was well known for the beautiful gardens in his yard.
Rudy spent most of his life working in the mining industry, both underground and above, retiring in 1989. During this time, he was an ardent union man, serving on his local’s executive and fighting hard for the rights of his fellow miners.
Rudy is survived by his four children, Derrick (Donna), Calgary, Mellodee (Earl), Ottawa, Cordell, Calgary and Yolanda (Shane), Sydney. He will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Rudy MacNeil, Patrice Aubrecht, LaTasha Aubrecht, Chatham Fricker, Marianne Aubrecht and Bretony Aubrecht and his two great-grandchildren.
Rudy was predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years, Shirley (Moore), who passed away 15 years ago. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Elizabeth (Beth) MacLaggan, Agnes MacDonald, Emma Farr, Rose Shiers, Milly Gillis, Mary Peterson and Jennie Legatto and brothers Yarmel and Frank.
Visitation for Rudy Aubrecht will be held in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Carman United Church, Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines, with Rev. David Luker officiating. The burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
In lieu of flowers, donations iin Rudy’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
