It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Lois Patricia Meloney, age 80, a resident of Queen Street, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at home, surrounded by her children.
Lois was born in Sydney in 1928, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Stone) Luther of Whitney Pier and wife of Sid Meloney.
She was educated in the Sydney school system, attended Normal College in Truro, and began her teaching career in 1948 in her home area of Whitney Pier.
Married in 1950 to Sid Meloney from North Sydney, Lois concluded her teaching career to focus on raising her family. She took great pride in being a homemaker, wife, business partner and friend to so many individuals. She excelled in making everyone who crossed her doorstep feel welcome. Lois enjoyed life to the fullest, especially her many years in Margaree at the cabin.
Lois is survived by her children, Pat and Norma Bell, Dover, N.H., Bruce and Lizz, North Sydney, Ross and Jan, Chicago, Ill.; Karen and Mike Landry, Bedford, Sid and Carolyn, Calgary, Alta. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, Lynn, Kate, Nicholas, Jonathan, Stephen, Mallory, Daniel, Lauren and Kendall. Lois is also survived by her sister, Ella (Luther) Mounce, Avondale, N.S.; and sister-in-law, Edna MacLeod and her children, Anne, Alan and Glenn and families.
Besides her parents, Lois was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Sid, who passed away just one week ago, her father and mother-in-law, George and Jean (Ross) Meloney, her brothers-in-law, George Ross Meloney and Purcell MacLeod.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Lois will be held from 7-9 p.m., Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, with Rev. John Hannem officiating, with reception to follow and burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation Comfort Room Fund, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care or Calvary Baptist Church.
