Lester Carl Fanning, 88, Linacy.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Dad, Lester Carl Fanning, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow on Wednesday, August 10, 2011.
Born September 16, 1922 in Seal Harbour, Guysborough County, he was a son of the late Winfield and Lillian (Hendsbee) Fanning.
A tall, strong, gentle man, he joined the Navy and served our country in World War II, and was a member of Branch 16, Royal Canadian Legion, Pictou. Lester took a pipefitter’s trade and was a member of the Boilermaker’s Union. He worked in construction all over Canada until his retirement in 1987. He loved to travel, and was a fisherman with a great love of the sea. Lester was also a member of the Golden Glen Senior’s Club in Plymouth, and enjoyed the club’s activities.
Most important of all was his love for his family. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, he was our tower of strength and beacon in any storm.
Surviving are his children: Marie (George) Hirtle, Lauretta (Donald) MacKenzie, Phillip (Claudette) Fanning, Leona (Mike) Smith, Donna (Pat) Guilderson, Garf (Dale) Fanning, special chosen daughter, Dawn (George) MacKay; stepchildren: (Rose Dewtie’s), John, Jo-Anne, Frank, Seymour, George, Art, and Kenda; sister, Mabel Francis; grandchildren:, Trina, Donna, Jean, Phillip, Shawna, Sherry, Darryl, Cindy, John, Jimmy, Barbara, Deana, Amber and Christopher; step-grandchildren: Christine, Michelle, and April; 24 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lois (Steele), and second wife, Rose (Dewtie); brothers, Douglas and Everett; sisters, Thelma, Louise, and one in infancy; step-daughter, Sylvia.
Visitation will be held 1-3 p.m. Monday, with funeral to follow at 3 p.m. from McLaren Funeral Home Chapel, Pictou, with Rev. Bill Rankin officiating. Burial will be in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery.
