Malcolm (Mack) Leslie Kohout passed away in James River on Sunday, August 14, 2011, in his 71st year.
He was the son of the late Edith (Robichaud) and Joseph Kohout of River Hebert, Nova Scotia.  
Mack is survived by his partner of 17 years, Gyan Wilder, as well as siblings Don (Naomi) of Nova Scotia, Bob (Knighta) of Nova Scotia, Doug (Betty) of Newfoundland, Bill (Marilyn) of Nova Scotia,  Joyce Hewlette (late George) of Ontario and Sandra Bossenberry of Ontario.  Also survived by 16 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife Joanne (Thompson), and siblings Mary, Elaine, Eleanor and Wayne.
Mack was born and raised in River Hebert. In high school he joined the River Hebert Cadet Corps, then was a member of the North N.S. Highlander Militia and was on stand-by for 30 hours at the 1958 Springhill Mine Disaster.  Then he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, followed by six years in the Ontario Provincial Police in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Later he returned to Nova Scotia and he and Joanne owned and operated Thompson Brothers Roofing and Siding Company of New Glasgow and Amherst, Nova Scotia, retiring in 1993. They were strong supporters of women's and workers' rights.  
In 1995 he moved to James River, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia and was recognized as an avid supporter of the arts as well as the rights of wildlife and the natural environment. He was a remarkable gardener, naturalist and wildlife photographer.  He was also an enthusiastic participant in the Antigonish Duplicate Bridge Club (Treasurer). Most importantly, Mack initiated anonymous, random acts of kindness wherever he went.
Cremation has taken place.
