Charlotte Sheltus

Charlotte Sheltus (nee Picard)
1932 -2024
It is with great sadness that family and friends announce the passing of Charlotte Sheltus, which occurred peacefully at CHSLD Bedford in the early hours of April 8, 2024, after a brief illness. Born on February 3, 1932, in Hanover New Hampshire, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Maurice Picard and Catherine Adams Moore Picard. With a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University, Charlotte worked in the banking industry for many years and later in the publishing industry with her late husband Ashley Sheltus. She reported that the time she was happiest was when she was editing Ashley’s book.
Charlotte was very active in her church and spearheaded fundraisers for the ACW (Anglican Church Women), notably the large bi-annual rummage sale at St. James Anglican Church, Bedford. Being an avid reader, she also established the book room in the James Davidson Hall, which was a fixture at every fundraiser and provided the community with much-needed English books. She brought the community together with the publishing of the monthly newsletter, “The Church Mouse”. As well as being a devoted churchgoer, in later years Charlotte was active in the regional ministry bible study and brought much richness to the group with her knowledge and understanding of scripture. Charlotte was a multi-dimensional person and surprised many with her stories of parachuting out of planes from the airfield in Farnham, an activity she shared with Ashley. Her love of cats was known to the community and her home became the drop-off for people who, sadly, no longer wanted their felines. She gave excellent care for them all but only allowed a select few into the house. Known for her intelligence and sometimes witty replies, Charlotte will be sorely missed.
Charlotte is pre-deceased by her loving husband Ashley Sheltus, her parents and her brother, Dr. Maurice Jerome (Jerry) Picard. She is survived by her niece Judy (Rhodes) Opar (spouse Peter, children Michael, Andrew and Nicholas) and nephew David Rhodes (spouse Marisa, children Colin and Elizabeth), her extended church family from St. James Church and beyond who cared for her very much, and many beloved cats including William and Theodora. Thanks go to the nurses and préposés as well as the many friends and clergy who sat vigil with Charlotte during the past week, particularly Velma, Mary and Wendy.
