Muriel Moore, a lifelong Amherstonian, died peacefully in her sleep early morning October 3, 2009. She was in her ninetieth year, and had recently become a resident of Willow Lodge in Tatamagouche.
Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Ada (Hunt) Simmons.
Muriel is survived by a large and extended family - one daughter, Sharon Smith (Peter), of Amherst head; a son, David, of Toronto; three grandchildren - Andrea, Fredericton NB; Vanessa Jones (Greg) and their two children Isaiah and Jordan, Amherst; Mark Smith (Heidi), and their two children, Ian and Phoebe of Amherst. Mrs. Moore worked for much of her life. For a short while she was employed by Christie Trunk and Baggage, covering caskets; next came a decades-long career with the Smith Brothers Studio, printing, developing and enlarging photographs; and finally to Dunlap's Hardware, where she became expert at selling paint, kitchenware and all kinds of hardware. At Smiths and Dunlaps, she greatly enjoyed meeting the public face to face, and it was with some regret that she retired in the 1980's. Mrs. Moore was a longtime member of Christ Church, and in her retirement years especially looked forward to the morning discussion group meetings. She was an excellent photographer, with a good lighting sense, and her albums of black and white pictures taken with a simple box camera in the 1950's and 60's, are treasured by the family. She was also a great walker and a huge fan of Coronation Street. After living alone for some years, and successfully overcoming a series of medical problems, she moved in to White Birches - which gave her a new lease on life. At her request, there'll be no visitation - she believed it was always better to visit people when they're still alive!
A funeral service will take place at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-9906) on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Archdeacon Glenn Eason officiating.
Interment will follow in the Amherst Cemetery.
In place of flowers, a donation to the Amherst Food Bank would be appreciated.
