It is with sadness we announce the death of our dear mother, Mary Kanchuk, age 83, formerly of 119 Tartan Dr., Whitney Pier. Mary passed away at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Oct. 3, 2009.
Born in the Ukraine, Mary was the daughter of the late Harry and Annie (Huk) Hasiuk.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alex Kanchuk and brother, John Hasiuk (Florence), Sydney.
She is survived by three children, David (Monica), Upper Leitches Creek, Robert (Darlene Burton), Cole Harbour, and Sandra (Mark Killam), Mira Road; as well as grandchildren, Alexa Kanchuk, Cole Harbour and Steven Killam, Mira Road.
Mary was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Polish Catholic Church in Whitney Pier, where she served on the Altar Society. Mary continued to live on her own for many years after her husband’s death with the support of many kind neighbours in Whitney Pier to whom the family is grateful. Due to declining health, she spent a significant amount of time in hospital this past year. She spent the last three months living with her daughter, Sandra, and family, on Mira Road.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, at St. Mary’s Polish Church in Whitney Pier at 11 a.m. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Mary’s Alter Society, Whitney Pier or to the charity of your choice.
