It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Gertrude Kennedy, age 81, of Glace Bay on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Maria was a beloved and cherished sister, sister-in-law, aunt and grand aunt. She was the eldest daughter of the late James and Catherine (McGillivray) Kennedy.
She was born on November 15, 1927 in Birch Grove. Maria was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. She was a quiet lady who liked to be involved in the celebrations of her extended family. She quietly sat and observed as she sipped a nice cup of tea. We will treasure her handiwork she made for us at Christmas, her favorite time of the year. Maria and her devoted sister, caregiver and best friend, Hilda, liked nothing better than to go for daily drives. She will be truly missed.
She is survived by her sisters, Hilda (with whom she resided), Glace Bay, Jovita (Ted - deceased) Koleszko, Sudbury, ON; brother, Gerald (Rose), Stellarton, 42 cherished nieces, nephews, several grand nieces and grand nephews; sisters-in-law, Murial and Mary.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Patrick (Catherine - deceased), William (Annie - deceased), Ignatius, Paul (Shirley - deceased), Thomas and Daniel.
Visitation for Maaria Kennedy will be held Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Maria’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
