WINTER, THOMAS LORNE - RCMP Sergeant-Major (Retired) -The passing of Tom Winter, Oromocto, NB occurred at the Oromocto Public Hospital Sunday, August 21, 2011. Born on September 21, 1924 in Montreal, QC, Tom was the last surviving member of the family of the late Henry Warren and Lydia (McWhinnie) Winter which included his sisters Mina McDonald (John F.) Sydney, NS and Muriel Beachell (Larry), Ottawa, ON. A beloved husband of 61 years to Margaret (FitzRandolph) Winter, their family includes children Alan and Shirley Winter, Chetwynd, BC; Brian Winter, Calgary, AB; Douglas and Charlotte Winter, Fredericton, NB; grandchildren Bradley Winter, Nelson, BC; Kris Winter, Ottawa, ON; step-granddaughter, Sammi Millar, Calgary, AB, nieces and nephews. Joining the RCMP in Montreal in 1943, Tom served in Rockcliffe, ON, Fredericton, St. George, St. Stephen, Grand Falls, Saint John, St. Andrews, Grand Manan, Gagetown, Oromocto, Moncton and Charlottetown. Retiring from the force in 1968, Tom and his family returned to New Brunswick where he became the Town Clerk of Oromocto. He retired from that position after 20 years. Active in the Masonic Lodge, Tom joined Sussex Lodge #7 St. Stephen, in 1948. Positions held included Past District Deputy Grand Master, Past Chairman, Masonic Charity and Housing Corporation and Past Worshipful Master of Centennial Lodge #53, Oromocto. As an Honourary member of Sunbury Lodge #42 Fredericton Junction, he received his 60-year pin in 2010. A member of Oromocto United Church, Tom served as Treasurer for twenty-five years. He was a Past President of the RCMP Veterans Association, New Brunswick Division. Although Tom loved all sports, hockey was his favourite. He played for the Regina Abbotts during training at depot and managed the Oromocto Pete’s. An avid Montreal Canadiens fan, Tom seldom missed a televised NHL game and had many stories about meeting coaches and players during travels with Marg.
At Tom’s request, there will be no visitation. A service of remembrance is scheduled for Friday, August 26, 2 p.m. at the Oromocto Funeral Home, Rev. Bob Jones officiating. Honourary pallbearers will be Alan Winter, Brian Winter, Doug Winter, Brad Winter, Wally Legge and Ed Lysyk. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the NB Masonic Charities & Housing Company Ltd. for “Camp Goodtime”. www.oromoctofh.com
