Joseph Leonard Wotherspoon

Len Wotherspoon passed away peacefully at the age of 86 years at the Centennial Special Care Home in Langenburg. Len was born in Hazel Dell, but grew up and lived much of his life in Langenburg. As a youngster he excelled in hockey, skating and tennis. He graduated from high school in 1944 and signed up to join the army. He was sent overseas as a member of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and served there until he was wounded in action in Germany, near the end of the war in 1945. In 1946 he was honorably discharged from the military, but rejoined again and served in Korea in 1951. When he returned home he became a mining engineer working in La Ronge, Yellowknife and Utah. In 1972 he returned to Langenburg to work at the potash mines near Esterhazy and Rocanville. He became an avid golfer which he continued long after his retirement both at home, and down in Texas where he was a “snowbird”. He moved into the care home in 2003 where he settled in, and received excellent and compassionate care from the staff over the years. Len is survived by his sisters Arline Schick and Shirley Wotherspoon, nieces Michelle and Lynette Wotherspoon, Gail Schick and Judy George, and his nephew Robert Wotherspoon. He is survived by great nieces and nephews Bruce, Tania and Robert Weinheimer, Nicole and Ryan George and Andrea Nylen. He is also survived by sister-in laws June Mitschke and Evelyn Wotherspoon. Len was predeceased by his parents Jack and Annie, two sisters, Francis and Margaret who died in infancy, his brothers Wilfred, Albert and Stanley, and his niece Carol Kirk. The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 26th, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Langenburg. Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery.
