Florence Mae Gillis passed away peacefully on Friday, August 26, 2011 in the MacGillivary Guest Home with her family at her side.
Daughter of the late Martin and Margaret (MacMullin) Gillis of Grand Mira, Florence was born in Sydney residing in Whitney Pier in her earlier years and then moving to Sutherland Street where she and husband John brought up their family.
She was a graduate of Mount St. Bernard, Antigonish and Provincial Normal College, Truro. Florence taught school at Meadows Rd. Sydney and Lakevale School (Grand Lake), retiring in 1979.
Florence was a member of St. Theresa's C.W.L. and the Retired Teachers Union. In her younger days, Flossie enjoyed skating, bowling, Sunday night cards with her good friends and attending functions at the K.O.C. with her husband John. Mom was known for her baking talents especially her infamous tea biscuits, fat archies and oatmeal cookies which were always present and ready to be served with a good Cape Breton cup of tea. Throughout their lives both Mom and Dad privately supported, in a variety of ways, people in need. Their great faith was a source of comfort and strength throughout their lives.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Florence is survived by her daughters, Lucille (Vince Byrne), Amherst and Alanna Baker (Kevin), Centreville, Nova Scotia. She is also survived by four grandchildren Kim Nashim (Jim), Lac La Biche, Alberta; Bobby Gillis (Jennifer), Calgary; Ben Brown (Joceline Young), Sackville, N.B.; and Ian Brown (April Rand), New Minas; by three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Amanda and Katie Nashim, Alberta; her daughter-in-law Cheryl Gillis, Dartmouth and sisters-in-law Rita Gillis, Sydney and Mary Crowell, Ontario, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband John Hugh Gillis in 1991; sons John D. and Fabian; sisters Mae, Margaret McCusker, Cecelia, Frances Peck and also by two brothers Joseph and Daniel S.
Visitation for Flossie Gillis will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa's Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
At Mom's request, donations may be made to the MacGillivary Guest Home in Sydney where Mom received wonderful attention throughout the past seven years. During her final days, Mom, Lucille and Alanna were surrounded by dignity, respect and loving care by all the MacGillivary staff.
