STEEVES, RUSSELL O'DELL - 1923 - 2011 - Russell O'Dell Steeves, 88, of Hillsborough passed away on August 28th, 2011 at the War Veteran's Hospital in Moncton. Russell was born in Hillsborough on August 19th, 1923 the son of the late Roland and Lillian ( Douthwright) Steeves. He was a veteran of WWII having served in Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and Holland, being wounded twice as he served his country. He was employed as a wheelsman on board ships in the Great Lakes for 7 years. He worked with the CNR until his retirement. He also worked with John McLatchy building cement basements. Russell served 8 years with Corps of Commissionaires in Fundy National Park. He was a founding and lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 32, Hillsborough. He was Past President of the Hillsborough Legion having served two terms and also served as Veteran's Service Officer helping Albert County Vets for 15 years. Russell attended the St. Mary's Anglican Church in Hillsborough for several years. He was a member of the Albert Mines Senior Citizens Club and a lifetime member of the Hillsborough Kiwanis. Russell also was involved with the Hillsborough and Moncton Baseball League where he was a licensed umpire for many years. He was also an avid crib player. Russell was a very special man who gave back to his community. He was also a very devoted husband, dad and grampy, He will live on in the hearts of his family forever. " What we keep in memory is ours forever." He will be deeply missed by his devoted and loving wife, Dorothy ; his daughters, Carolyn Wissmann (Eric) of Parsboro and Cathy-Lee Kelly (John) of Moncton; and by his precious grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Nathan; step grandchildren, John and Elke. He will also be missed by his sisters, Nina Ward of Hillsborough, Audrey Jonah (Arnold) of Riverview; brothers, Garnet Steeves (Emily) of Riverview and Wayne Steeves (Margaret) of Massachusetts. He will also be missed by sister-in-law, Sharon Steeves of Riverview and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Armand and Gerald; sister, Marion; half-brothers, Frank Letterick, John Letterick and half sister, Ethel Ingles.
He will be resting at the Albert County Funeral Home with visitation on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9pm. The Legion Memorial service will be held at the start of the Funeral Service at 4:00pm. The Funeral Service will be held at the Albert County Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 31st at 4:00pm with Rev. Roderick Black officiating. Following the service the family will be meeting with relatives and friends for further sharing of memories and for refreshments. Interment will be held in the Grey's Island Cemetery, Hillsborough, NB. Donations to the St. Mary's Anglican Church or to the charity of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
