It is with great sadness that the family of Deacon Parago announce his passing on Saturday August 27, 2011 peacefully at home.
Born and raised in Sydney he was the son of the late James and Mary (MacNeil) Parago.
He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish. He served in the army from 1942-1944 in Holland, Italy, France, and England with the Carlton and York Regiment of New Brunswick. He was also a faithful member of the branch 12 legion for 35 years.
He was employed by the Sydney Steel plant from 1944 until his retirement in 1983. Deacon could always be found with Scotty Black preparing the Alexandra Street baseball field. For many years he coached the KOC Red Sox Little League team. Deacon was an avid Montreal Canadiens hockey fan and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Florence (Roberts) Parago; his son, Michael and his wife Mary (Carroll). He will also be sadly missed by granddaughters, Stephanie and Nicole, and special great-granddaughter Abbey. He is also survived by two sisters, Mae Devoe, North Sydney and Gertie MacIntyre, Sydney, and sister-in-law; Casey Parago, Sydney, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Bernie and Donald; sisters, Helen Hudson, Betty Baker, Florence O’Toole, and Kissie MacNeil.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the SW Chant and Son Funeral Home on 564 Alexandra St. Sydney. Funeral service to take place on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers donations in Deacons memory may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital foundation.
